I have spent several days trying to get a decent shot of the Hummingbirds at our feeder. Over the weekend I finally got one that was worth sharing, so here it is finally!

Checking Me Out
Yesterday I had a big project I needed to do before the rains hit our area. I was able to get it done and had time before it started rain to get a few clicks in. I decided to try to get a shot of the Hummingbirds feeding on the Jewelweed out back of our house. I found a little spot along the fence line where I could be partially hidden and stood there and waited. And waited. And waited some more.I could hear the Hummingbirds chattering away behind me so I knew they would eventually make around but I was getting attacked by several types of flying insects and was not sure how long I could hold out. After the second fly-by of a very large wasp I decided it was time to go but really wanted to get something for my efforts. I knew if I moved quickly the Hummingbirds behind me would scatters so to minimize that possibility I pivoted around without moving my feet. I could hear the buzz of wings of the Hummingbirds as they moved about and one of the birds turned and came towards me. It landed on a branch not far from me, checking me out as it also keep an eye out for the other Hummingbirds. As it was looking up I carefully lifted my camera and snapped away. This shot, and two in the arm by a thorn-bush I did not know was there, is what I got for my effort.
Another Best Of The Worst
I took my Sony A300 out to test my new-to-me-zoom lens and as is with all thing there is a learning curve. I have to admit I am rushing things. There is just a few things going on in my life right now that can cause one to feel pushed upon but I need to carve out small blocks of time to breathe the wonderment around me. And you do too! As I was walking around our place a slight movement out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. I turned towards the movement and saw something small but pretty cool. It was a tiny Damselfly skipping through the air! I followed it to where it landed and tried to get the A300 to focus on it but it was too small. The camera keep on focusing on the Spotted Jewelweed (for size comparison I might add a Spotted Jewelweed is about the size of an average persons top joint on their pinky finger) and missing the little bugger. So I manually focused this shot and missed the sweet spot a bit. I still like it though and I hope you like another best of the worst.

Reflections Instead Of Z’s
The Bride and I spent the evening with great friends and survived a major thunderstorm and flash floods to do so. With the storms still lurking about as we drove home I became wide awake and not even close to being ready for bed. What does one do who has bitten by the photography bug do? Dabbles in said pursuit if one can no matter the time of day….or night. I was looking around the lab, aka home office, when I spied some items a top my PC tower . Since one of my weaknesses if finding my place in the light I decided to test drive some new-found ways to get good captures in low light. Here is one I took using a new-to-me Sony Alpha prime lens and messing with the camera’s on-board AB settings. Here is to Reflections Instead Of Z’s. Enjoy.
One On The Fly
Oh My, What A Fly
I was trying out my new extension tubes on my Sony A300 with a Minolta lens this evening. The Minolta lenses are very difficult to focus using the extension tubes. I also have to “guess” on the shutter-speed as the light meter is not accurate with the tubes on. Here is one I got right of a fly I have never seen before so I looked it up. It is I believe a Tiger Bee Fly and oh my, what a fly!
Something Extraordinary
After mowing the lawn today I got to use the new manual extension tubes on my Sony A300 I purchased from Amazon. Since I have 35mm film lenses that I use on the A300 I felt comfortable shooting in full manual mode with the extension tubes. What I wasn’t expecting is how soft and wide the edges are with my first choice of lens ( Minolta 50mm f 1:1.7 ). I think it will be a little sharper when I shot with just one extension ring on not all tree at once. I did not get to try that today as we had plans for early this evening. As I downloaded the pics tonight I found a picture I took but thought it would not come out at all. The light was wrong, the angle I had to shot it was wrong and most of the subject was not in an advantageous position for my to get a proper shot. I took it anyway. Now I am glad I did. Below is that shot and it all started when I rescued this little fellow from path of the blades of my mower earlier. I remembered I had moved this little one out-of-the-way of my mowing and really thought it would be gone but it was not. So I took this shot and did not have any idea what to expect but what I found was something extraordinary. Can anyone guess what it is? No prizes awarded I am afraid but this should be fun.

Hanging Tough
I was out and about our place earlier this month trying out my Sony A300. I was having a decent test drive of the Sony but was not finding much to shoot because of the always present wind that day. I like shooting nature in macro and well wind is not your friend if that is your thing. As I was heading back in when I saw two Dragonflies on some weeds by the fence roll. As I approach one chanced the wind and headed farther into the field but the other, well he just decided to ride it out. So here is one cool Dragonfly Hanging Tough!
